Pierre Villain Painting - Children at Table

Pierre Villain (French, 1880-1950). Oil on canvas painting of three young boys seated at a table eating. Signed "Pierre Villain" and titled "A La Maternelle" (In Kindergarten) on support, verso. View measures 19-3/4" x 25-3/4" in a 25" x 30-1/2" frame. Strongly rooted in European Social Realism, Villain's work shows influence by Robert Henri and George Bellows, and bears a resemblance to work by his contemporaries, Moses and Raphael Soyer. Several of his pre-war works are in today's sale.
