Piet van der Hem belonged to the group 'Modernen' early 20th century, including Gestel and Sluijters. His subjects he mostly found in the sophisticated nightlife and he liked to travel a lot. In Paris, Rome, Madrid and Moscow, he painted the life on the streets and in the cabarets, dance palaces and music-halls. During a stay in Volendam and Edam from 1917 to 1919 he was inspired by the beach and fisherman’s life and by the mondaine tourists who visited these places. In addition to painting, he was also working as an illustrator and political cartoonist for The Haagsche Post and the Haagsche Courant. The offered work from 1918 is an early work by this distinguished artist. His work can be enjoyed in numerous museums and private collections. The work is signed on the bottom left.
