At the beginning of the 20th century, Piet van der Hem belonged to the group of 'moderns' that also includes Gestel and Sluijters. In addition to being a painter, he also worked as an illustrator and political cartoonist for 'De Nieuwe Amsterdammer', 'De Haagsche Post' and 'De Haagsche Courant'. This beautiful work is a wonderful original from a print that could possibly be used as a cartoon.
