\Artist: Pieter Muller detto il Cavalier Tempesta (1637-1701)
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 50_64_5_cm
Pieter Muller, known as Cavalier Tempesta (1637-1701) . Oil on canvas, 50x64 cm. Expert report by prof. Camillo Manzitti. First canvas. Peter Mulier arrived in Italy in 1656 and stayed in Rome, where he met Cornelius De Waeil, who was arriving in Rome after 40 years in Genoa. He was influenced by the painting of Gaspard Dughet, who in turn took his inspiration from his brother-in-law Nicolas Poussein. In Rome he worked for the Dukes of Bracciano, Prince Colonna, Cardinal Gilberto Borromeo, Aloisio Omodei and for the Doria Pamphilj family. Even today, splendid frescoes are preserved in Palazzo Colonna. Already from 1659 he was enrolled in the Guild of Dutch Painters under the name of Tempesta, which was given to him for the numerous paintings depicting the rough sea with struggling ships. In 1668 he moved to Genoa also because after the departure of De Wael, there had been no talented marine painter left. But the basic reason was probably jealousy towards his wife, who had a reputation for being an easy woman. This problem had ended up causing him serious health problems. Mulier lived in the monastery of San Giacomo in Carignano, then moved to the centre, in contact with his employers, including Doria and Brignole Sale.
