An extremely rare and large antique Japanese porcelain plate with a central decoration of the VOC-logo (first multi national with shareholders) , surrounded by phoenixes in a mountainous landscape with peaches, chrysanthemum, bamboo and peonies, executed in a nice dark underglaze blue and white, suggesting this is one of the first plates produced in this series. Handcrafted in ancient Japan during the Edo period (1650-1680) . Guaranteed original and of the stated period. Every serious museum needs to have one of these plates, although very rare and preserved for the high ranked VOC officials (there’s a captains log saying these plates were way to expensive to make any profits back in Europe) , these plates (especially the early ones such as this one) are extremely sought after and valuable. The first piece to be seen in the exhibition about the trade between Asia and Europe at the Rijksmuseum, was a plate from this series.
