First edition of Michel de Marolles' translation of the works of Plautus, including the Latin text opposite, with 4 beautiful frontispieces engraved by F. Chauveau, presenting a scene and exterior view of a classical theater.
M. de Marolles used for his edition the corrections left by the late François Guiet. After the epistle to the king and the preface follows a biography of Plautus, a chronology covering the time of Plautus' death with a chronological table of Adam and Eve up to 159 BC. B. C. , a bibliography of editions of Plautus and ancient and modern literature on the Comedies. Then the table of contents of the 4 volumes, then the pieces themselves.
Complete in four well-established volumes in period full calfskin bindings with arms (unidentified) : hand holding a bouquet of natural garden lilies. Ornate backs. Red speckled slices.
Condition: used bindings (leveled caps, cracked joints, blunt corners) , remain solid and decorative. Yellowed interiors, some foxing. Reasonable condition.
