【Product details】

This Meiji-era Kogo (incense container) is a harmonious marriage of aesthetic grace and skilled craftsmanship. The lid and sides are resplendently adorned with a dense maki-e design of plum blossoms, a motif rich in symbolism, often associated with the resilience and vitality of spring, as the plum is one of the first flowers to bloom, heralding the end of winter. This theme is elegantly framed by a silver rim, adding a touch of refined elegance.

The intricate maki-e technique involves sprinkling gold or silver powder as a decoration on a lacquered object, creating these delicate plum blossoms that seem to bloom across the surface. The nashiji finish inside and on the base of the Kogo, resembling the skin of a pear, complements the outer maki-e, creating a piece that is as tactile as it is visually stunning.

The Kogo shows signs of patina and wear commensurate with its age, which are documented in the photos. It comes thoughtfully presented in a wooden box, and a fabric pouch, enhancing its collectible value.

Dimensions: approx. H 4. 8 cm W 10. 5 cm D 10. 5 cm
