Plymouth - Superbird 440CI 'Super Commando' V8 Coupe - NO RESERVE - 1970

Do not miss this opportunity and become the new owner of this exceptional Superbird, the Holy Grail of MOPAR muscle cars. This is a NO RESERVE PRICE AUCTION. The Superbird, a modified Road Runner, was developed specifically for NASCAR racing and was Plymouth's follow-up design to the Dodge Charger Daytona of the previous season. The Charger Daytona, was the first American car to be aerodynamically designed using a wind tunnel and computer analysis. The Charger 500 was rolled straight back into the wind tunnel. With the expertise of former NASA staff, the car underwent an even more intensive aerodynamic test programme. With the aim of further improving the aerodynamic properties of the Charger. Numerous experiments resulted in a long and pointy nose, with which the car almost literally cut a path through the atmosphere. In the wind tunnel, the Charger Daytona racer recorded a remarkable Cw value of 0. 28. Which is still much lower than the super smooth Audi 100 would score over 13 years later. This value could have been even better if the need for a tall rear wing had not existed. During tests with a Charger Daytona prepared in accordance with NASCAR regulations, a top speed of 243 miles per hour – 390 km/h was achieved! Obviously, at such speeds, it was not desirable for the rear wheels of the car to lose contact with the ground. The tall wing served purely to generate the required downward pressure. The Superbird's smooth bodywork and nose were further refined compared to the Daytona. The Road Runner's folding headlights (made of fibreglass) added 19 centimetres to its original length! The rear wing was mounted on high vertical struts, which increased the efficiency of the downward wind that it forced down onto the rear axle of the car. NASCAR's homologation requirement demanded that vehicles for racing must be available to the general public and sold through dealers in a specific minimum quantity. For 1970, NASCAR raised the production requirement from 500 to one for every two manufacturers' dealerships in the United States; in Plymouth's case, that meant 1,920 Superbirds had to be built. Due to increasing emission regulations, combined with insurance peaks for high-performance cars and NASCAR's effective ban on aero cars, 1970 was the only year of production. Many of the produced Superbirds were converted back to Road Runners, which makes the Superbird extra rare. The outer edges of the vertical struts of the spoiler feature Superbird emblems with an image of the Road Runner cartoon character holding a racing helmet. A smaller version of the emblem can be found on the headlight on the driver side. The '70 Superbird on offer here is one of the most iconic Muscle Cars ever built, the Superbird almost feels like a Car of Myth as not everyone has seen one in real life. We are therefore proud to give you the opportunity to be one of the few to own a Superbird. This Superbird is equipped with the original matching numbers 440CI Super Commando V8 and 727 Automatic Transmission. This is the 128th Superbird to be produced. Let's start with the exterior of this Superbird. If you walk around it, you will notice that the bodywork is in excellent condition and that all of the panels have a correct fit along the openings. The car is also neatly coated in its Lemon Twist lacquer as applied by the factory. In addition, the car is also fitted with the factory option that is the V19 Black Vinyl Top which perfectly matches the Yellow Twist lacquer and provides a nice contrast. The return of multiple NASCAR champion Richard The King Petty to Plymouth, after a year of driving for Ford, soon contributed to the Superbird turning into a legend. Petty won eight races in 1970 with the Road Runner. This Superbird even has The King’s signature on the front wing. The wing of this Superbird is in excellent condition and is adorned with the Road Runner Superbird emblem. To complete the look, the car has wheels with Firestone Wide Oval Letter tyres. On the inside, the Superbird is fitted with black leather and a bench (also a special factory option) . Both the front and rear seats are in excellent condition, as are the headliner and the neat carpet. The dashboard is in original and unaltered condition and the original steering wheel is fitted with the (working) Road Runner Beep-Beep tone. All of the gauges are in original and working condition and the car still has the original radio. Under the bonnet, we find the Matching Numbers 440CI V8 Super Commando engine fitted with the correct (2951736) intake manifold and a Holley 750 carburettor. The engine is also equipped with the original valve covers and air filter box. You will also find all the original stamps and tags (Fender tag, radiator support stamping, trunk lip stamping) . The 727 automatic transmission is also matching numbers and is connected to an 8'' Sure Grip rear end and a 3. 55 gear. The manifolds (2899879 and 2951865) are also original.
