Pocket watch: important, large gold/enamel verge watch by Pierre Gregson Souvenir L'Amitié, ca. 1790

Ø53mm, approx. 75g, 18k gold, both sides set with half Oriental pearls, the back with fine enamel painting, representation of a couple at the altar of love, below the diamond-set lettering on a white cloth decorated with gold and green paionne inlays, pendant and also decorated with fine paionne inlays, pendant with opening button, extremely rare thin Gregson calibre, verge escapement, signed, excellently preserved signed enamel dial, pink gold hands, movement starts ticking but needs urgently cleaning. Provenance: Geneva "Important Timepieces" (https://www.cortrie.de/go/bl2). Gregson was of British origin and watchmaker to the King. He must have been considered one of the best among his contemporaries, as he was appointed to the commission of the Royal Watch Manufactory in 1786. Only three other watchmakers were represented on this commission: Breguet, Berthoud and Lepaute. Today, Gregson's outstanding enamel watches are among the most valuable collector's items in this field. But it is not only the fantastic enamel cases but also Gregson's special movements that make these watches so interesting.
