Ca. Ø37.5mm, approx. 55g, 18k gold, extremely unusual and extremely precious case, hinged on both sides, blue engine turned enamel on both sides, surrounded on both sides with large Old European cut diamonds, ca. 15-20ct, crown also set with a large Old European cut diamond, black enamelled inside, crown winding, movement signed European Watch an Clock Comp. No.872872, dial signed Cartier (restored), pink gold hands, movement needs service/cleaning (fully wound), in excellent condition, unique piece. Provenance: Christies Geneva 2005 This treasure is a mystery. The case is one of the most precious pocket watch cases from the 19th century known. The diamond setting of approx. 15-20 ct shows that this pocket watch was made for a very special and, above all, wealthy customer, most probably for the Russian market. This watch was then modernised in the 20th century, possibly by Cartier. It is very likely that the watch also received the black enamelling on the inside at this time and that the pendant was converted to crown winding.
