Pola / Venezia Giulia. ca. 1925.
Metlicovitz gives us a relaxing seaside view of the Pula Arena, constructed between 27 BC and 68 AD; today it's one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters. Though Pula (or, in Italian, Pola) is now the largest city in Istria County, Croatia, it's had a tumultuous history of occupation by Italy, France, and Austria before being returned to Italy in 1918. Eight years later, the Italian State Railways commissioned this design as part of a larger transit and tourism initiative. Today, Pola retains some of its Italian heritage; the official languages are both Croatian and Italian.
