Poland - 20th century - 1983 - Sławomir Szereda (b. 1956) - Print “Horse-Drawn Carriage” JÓZEF PIŁSUDSKI, POLISH CAVALRY, CAVALRY EQUIPMENT
“The Horse Government” is an early print by Szereda. Created a year after the artist received his diploma, the work depicts part of a military horse’s equipment—a saddle (with a girth, stirrup leathers, and stirrups) along with a saber. It should be noted, however, that the main subject of the print is Marshal Józef Piłsudski (modeled after the famous painting “Józef Piłsudski on Kasztanka” by Wojciech Kossak). Etching, inscribed: 1/50, Poland 1983, and signed “S. Szereda 83.”
Dimensions: 27 x 35.5 cm.
Frame: 40 x 48 cm.
Condition as shown in the photos.
Sławomir Szereda graduated from the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź; he received his diploma in 1982 from the Department of Graphic Arts and Painting in the studios of Professors Leszek Rózga and Stanisław Fijałkowski. His works have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad, and many are part of private collections. Sławomir Szereda is a recognized continuator of the magnificent tradition of depicting horses in Polish art. Just as with the Kossaks, horses and equestrianism are his lifelong passions. As an active rider, he masterfully depicts horses. The print above, with its equestrian and patriotic theme, carries a special message of independence—it was created during martial law, when works of this kind were particularly harshly suppressed by the authorities of the waning Polish People’s Republic.
