Antoni Feliks Nowakowski (January 12, 1799 – July 2, 1878) was from the Lublin Province. He was the son of Jakub, a landowner, and Joanna née Stawiarska, owners of the Świeciechów estate. He was born on estates belonging to the parish of Opole Lubelskie—his birth was recorded in the registers for the villages of Dębina, Ciepielówka, Jankowa, and Grobla. Judging by an incorrectly preserved Latin inscription on canvas, from September 10, 1812, to July 31, 1816, he studied at the Collegium Nobilium in Warsaw (on August 29, at the Piarist seminary in Żoliborz, he passed the oral examination for admission to higher education as Antoni Nowakowski, son of Jakub of Sieciechów). He lived in Warsaw on Mostowa Street, at 114 Piwna Street, and at 1806 Franciszkańska Street, supporting himself from his own estate. In 1819, he married Kordula Kijewska (d. 1832), a judge’s daughter, the daughter of Franciszek and Teresa née Kobylnicka. In his wife’s death certificate, he is listed as an assessor of the Municipal Office of the City of Warsaw, and in his son’s baptismal certificate from 1833, he is listed as an assessor of the Police Court of the City of Warsaw—a position he held at least since 1826. Franciszek lived at 1908 Twarda Street. In 1840, in another belated baptismal record for his son, Franciszek is listed as the Inspector General of the Treasury, residing at 950 Żabia Street. He had two sons: Antoni Konstanty Emilian (born 1820 in Lublin) and Edward Stefan Franciszek Jakub (born 1826 in Warsaw—died 1901). Franciszek rose to the rank of Court Counselor and Head of the former Government Administration of Tobacco Revenues in the Kingdom of Poland. He subsequently retired and died after a serious illness. The portrait was likely painted to commemorate his graduation from the Collegium Nobilium.
