Wave Projects, London Dimensions: 240 x 35 x 35 cm Artist Name: Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926- Italy Literature: "Arnaldo Pomodoro. Catalogo ragionato della scultura. Tomo I+II" Flaminio Gualdoni, Ed. Skira, Milan 2007, cf. nr. 844 ill.
Included in the Archives of Studio Arnaldo Pomodoro as number 621 Notes: A MODERN TRIUMPHAL COLUMN

Like a modern triumphal column, Colonna I by Arnaldo Pomodoro appears stately in a room. With a height of almost two-and-a-half metres and a dazzling golden patina, this sculpture demands to be looked at. The column is a broken-open structure, with the upper and lower parts smooth and shiny, while the middle part displays a rough, rhythmic structure. A tense contrast between perfection and chaos, calm and turmoil, civilisation and anarchy.

In these contradictions, as a viewer, you search for content and story, like a classical triumphal column. Think of Trajan's Column in Rome where the story of the Roman victory against rebellious Dacia is depicted. However, no heroic stories can be found in Pomodoro’s structures. Only rows of geometric shapes are exposed. Mysterious signs and symbols, one might almost expect it to represent a secret language of a still undiscovered civilisation from a distant past. Although this mixture of shapes also seems to refer to modern industrial or electrical equipment.

Colonna marks Pomodoro's quest in making three-dimensional forms that began in the 1960s. From then on, he increasingly focused on producing freestanding sculptures, such as cubes and spheres. Objects that deliberately, and sometimes defiantly, occupy a space of their own. Yet this Italian sculptor regularly returns to the powerful motif of the column. This classical form was one of his first free-standing sculptures and earned him artistic recognition.
