[ translate ]

(Lucca 1708–1787 Rome)
A reclining male nude with drapery, c. 1765, inscribed “Pompeo Battoni”, black chalk, heightened with white, on grey laid paper, 41,2 x 53,9 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Auction sale Galerie Bassenge, Berlin, 27th May 2011, lot 6282 (as “Pompeo Batoni attributed to”); Private collection, Italy.

The present drawing is a characteristic example for the numerous studies of male nudes, which Pompeo Batoni executed around the middle of the 1760s. Like with the present sheet Batoni also preferred for other drawings black chalk and white heightening on grey laid paper. The male nudes are mostly depicted in expressive postures either seated, reclining or leaning against a stone plinth or a rock. The Albertina in Vienna keeps four comparable nude studies from 1765 (Inv. Nr. 1346, 1347, 6733, 14295), two other studies are preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (Inv.Nr. 94.1050, 94.1051)

The attribution to Pompeo Batoni was confirmed by Prof. Francesco Petrucci on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.
