The equestrian statue of the Great Elector, which is a monument to Elector Friedrich
Wilhelm of Brandenburg (1620-1688) from the House of Hohenzollern, is an important work of
Baroque sculpture and was a popular motif of the KPM for its Berlin views. The model,
begun in 1696 by Andreas Schlüter, was cast by Johann Jacobi in 1700 and erected on the
Kurfürsten-Bridge at the Berlin Palace in 1703. Due to the danger posed by the increasing
air raids during the Second World War, the equestrian statue was brought to safety and
later re-erected in the Court of Honor of Charlottenburg Palace in 1952. In connection
with the present reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace, the return of the monument to
its original location in Berlin Mitte is currently being discussed.
