Portmeirion Pottery Magic City Coffee Service by Susan Williams-Ellis
A vintage earthenware coffee service manufactured by Portmeirion Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, England. The set features the Magic City pattern, a surrealist architectural design by Susan Williams-Ellis executed in a palette of dark green, black, white, and orange. The decoration is applied via a fine-line lithographic transfer, creating an intricate effect of stippling and cross-hatching. The service includes a tall cylindrical coffee pot with a white angular handle and spout, fitted with a black conical lid and circular knob. The ensemble is completed by six coffee cans with white angular handles, six solid matte black glazed saucers, six white-rimmed side plates decorated with central architectural motifs, a cream jug with an angular handle, and an open sugar bowl.
The base of the coffee pot and side plates feature a printed copper-toned oval backstamp reading MAGIC CITY in quotation marks, followed by DESIGNED BY SUSAN WILLIAMS-ELLIS, PORTMEIRION POTTERY, Stoke-on-Trent, and MADE IN ENGLAND. The white glazed surfaces exhibit a fine crazed finish throughout.
More Information
The service exhibits widespread and significant fine-line crazing to the glaze on all white-bodied components, including the coffee pot, cups, jug, and plates, as visible in images 8 through 14. There is noticeable brown staining and organic residue inside the coffee pot spout (image 12) and around the base rims of the coffee pot and several cups (images 4, 15). The matte black saucers show light surface scratches consistent with use. No chips or structural cracks are visible in the provided photographs.
