Property from the Estate of Dr. Charles and Anita Winter
Thomas Gainsborough R.A.
Sudbury 1727 - 1788 London
Portrait of Surgeon-General David Middleton (1703-1785), bust-length, tucking his hand into his embroidered waistcoat

oil on canvas, unlined
canvas: 29½ by 24½ in.; 74.9 by 62.2 cm.
framed: 37¼ by 32½ in.; 94.6 by 82.5

Condition Report:
The canvas has not been relined. It remains stable and planar, and the paint surface is in very good condition. The colors and details of the waistcoat remain in excellent condition, and Gainsborough's trademark brushwork, which is soft and careful, remains beautifully preserved. The background appears somewhat thin but it is likely to have been painted this way on purpose. The varnish is glossy and even, with some light abrasion along the very left edge of the canvas that appears to be only affecting the varnish layer. Ultraviolet light reveals an even, milky varnish and only a handful of pinpoint restorations in the composition. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
