The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

GIULIO PIPPI, called GIULIO ROMANO
Portrait of a woman, head and shoulders
Circa 1520-1523.
Oil on panel, in a carved and gilt wooden frame
45.6 x 31 cm; 17 7/8 x 12 ¼ in.

The soft wood panel has been reduced in thickness to mitigate historic worm damage; there have been some minor repairs to the reverse.

The paint layer is stable and secure and in a very good preserved condition.

Some of the vertical grain is slightly raised and is visibly proud in raking light.

Very fine hairline cracks can be detected to the paint layer with minimal associated paint loss.

Under u-v light minor restored loss can be seen to the forehead and the proper right cheek, likely old worm damage.
Very minor retouching can also be seen in the background by her ear.

The skin tones to chest and neck are in very good original condition and details to the eyes, nose and curls of the hair are intact.

A residue of a discoloured varnish, particularly in the hair, can be detected and its removal would improve overall tonality.
