According to a personal note, Schwab acquired this figure during his trip to the Congo in 1969/70 in the area of the Kwango River.
He reports that he exchanged it for "clothes, knife, hat etc." from a "bone breaker" (medicine man) and that the figure should protect against malevolent people and diseases.
