Title: Pr ½ Sized Mallard Decoys by S Pierce HDG,MD Provenance: A pair (male/female) of half-sized Mallard Decoys, signed on the bottom “S Pierce, HDG, MD” (Steiner Pierce, Havre de Grace, Maryland). (Frederick) Steiner Pierce is the brother of the more famous Maryland carver Jim Pierce and his birds very much resemble those carved by his brother. Each bird is 10 ¼” from bill to tail and about 4 ¼” to the top of the head. Both retain their original, detailed paint, including painted eyes. Both are in very fine, original condition with no chips, cracks, splits, paint loss, etc. Steiner Pierce began carving when he was in his 70s and I would date these decoys c. 1990.
