Pr Sarah Elenor Melendy Westcott Oberlin Oils 1891, Note, this artist appears to be an early Chicago artist and Oberlin alumnus who was living as an expatriate in Paris. There is no specific Oberlin connection to this lot other than her biographical citations. One of her oils of similar Barbizon influence and palette did well at Hindmans but was catalogued as 1850s that we suspect may have either depicted an 1850s scene or was actually painted in the later 19th century, pair, oils on canvas of cottages and ducks, each 14 x 22 inches, each 20 x 30 x 2.75 inches framed, one signed lower left and dated 1891, the other unsigned, the one with the signature appears to read ...elendy Westcott, the second half of the S. E. Melendy Westcott signature that appears on the Castagna artistssignatures site and what appears to be the same signature attempting to magnify the online Hindman sale record, the reverse of the unsigned work is prominently dry inscised likely with the back end of a brush Property of Mrs G C Hagman or perhaps Hayman across the center of the lower stretcher, matching bronze gilt late Victorian frames. The artist appears in the Oberlin College pdf Forgotten Books under 1871 Literary as Sarah Elenor note not eleanor Melendy hyphen Westcott parentheses Mrs. George, Paris, France care Drexel, Hargis note not harjes and Company. Online we found the firm as a precursor firm to JP Morgan Bank founded in 1868 by John H. Harjes note not harjis. We assume from this citation that Mrs. Westcott was likely 1871 Oberlin alumni and her husband George Westcott was a banker active in Paris. Note Castagna also cites an artist George Westcott with references as 20th century. Our staff also found a born 1846 Milwaukee date that may apply to Sarah and 3.12.1843 to 6.29.1912 dates that may apply to George. Another note in our research is Sarah painting the First US Post Office in Chicago 1893 signing and dating similarly but the citation was not located or verified at time of cataloging. Provenance: Tampa Bay sale of estate items from Chicago and New York tied retirees, names not made available. RSI NAAKB
Condition Report: Generally intact and still handsome as found estate discovery condition, dirty, craquelure, flakes, sagging, likely old cleaning, loose in frames that are bronzed and show chipping and cracking throughout.
