A Pre Civil War U.S. Militia Officer's sword with scabbard by Ames, Chicopee. Circa 1840-1860. 31 1/4" double edged blade. Etched design martial and foliate design. Signed "AMES MFG CO/ CHICOPEE/ MAS." Signed motto on blade illegible. Gilded brass cruciform guard and plumed knights helm pommel. Two chains connect quillion to pommel. Bone grip with line decoration. Gilded brass scabbard with eagle and oak leaf mounts. Scabbard maker marked on reverse. 37 1/4" overall. 32" scabbard. Condition: 80% of original finish. Areas of tarnish. Streaking on scabbard. Small crack in grip. Provenance: See page 130 "The American Sword 1775-1945" Harold L. Peterson.
