Pre-Columbian Aztec / Mixtec Andesite Celt

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Aztec / Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. This is a large hand-pecked stone celt made from andesite in excellent condition. This is a hefty celt that has both a flared blade end and a tapered handle, terminating in a pick-like tip. The celt is very capable of dealing some death blows or as a durable tool for utilitarian use. The central midrib or ridge is prominent on both faces and was incorporated to make the stone stronger and perhaps to facilitate grip. The flared blade has some nicks and wear from age and perhaps use as well as remains of a russet red pigment. Size: 10.75" L x 3.35" W (27.3 cm x 8.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA collection; ex-Peter Arnovick estate, San Francisco, California, USA, since the 1970s
