Pre-Historic Fossilized Basilosaurus Tooth

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Seas, Morocco, Late Eocene, ca. 40 to 35 million years ago. This is a beautiful basilosaurus tooth that has two long roots and glossy enamel with three substantial serrations on one edge, and hairline striations that formed from the fossilization process. The enamel has been polished to rounded tips and has umber hues. Basilosaurus means "king lizard"; however, it was a prehistoric whale, one of the largest mammals at the time with an elongated, snake-like body. As this jagged tooth suggests, it was a predatory species that hunted fish, sharks, and other prehistoric sea animals. This tooth is a fascinating reminder of the massive creatures that roamed the planet long before humanity. Size: 2.625" L x 1.75" W (6.7 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hagar collection, Wildwood, Missouri, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
