Pre WWI US Navy Hospital Corpsman Identified White Service Jumper
Pre World War I United States Navy sailor white service jumper. The interior lower hem features a black stencil applied twice reading M.D. SCRUGGS. The underside of the dark blue wool collar contains a white stencil also reading M.D. SCRUGGS. Inside the neck area, Scruggs initials M.D.S. are handwritten inscription in dark ink. This jumper is constructed from heavy white cotton twill and features a dark blue wool flannel sailor collar adorned with three rows of white linen tape and two white embroidered stars. The cuffs are also fashioned from dark blue wool with three rows of white tape and two-button closures. The left sleeve displays a rating badge for a Petty Officer Third Class, featuring a dark blue eagle over a single chevron, centered with a red cross specialty mark identifying the rate of Pharmacist Mate. Construction details include a pointed yoke on the back and a small, white embroidered three-pointed reinforcement, known as a crow's foot, at the base of the neck opening. A small loop for a neckerchief is located on the center chest. The garment shows significant wear and age-related deterioration consistent with field use. The white cotton body exhibits overall yellowing, heavy foxing, and numerous brown stains across the front, back, and sleeves. The dark blue wool collar and cuffs display extensive moth tracking and numerous small moth holes throughout the fabric. The white decorative tape on the cuffs is frayed and partially detached from the wool substrate in several places. Pickup is Monday, Nov. 9, from 11 am to 7 pm at our facility in Lancaster, OH. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot, or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
