Prehistoric Cretaceous Fossilized Fish

South America, Brazil, early Cretaceous period, ca. 125 million years old. A fine prehistoric fossilized fish, surrounded by a thick layer of stone sediment. The streamlined body beautifully displays the rows of scales. The species is difficult to discern, but may be in the genus Rhacolepis - prehistoric and now extinct species of ray finned fish. The fish was excavated to reveal the upper half of the body, with the rest enclosed in the stone matrix. The exterior scales have developed a caramel brown hue from the fossilization process. Size: 4.75" L x 2" W (12.1 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
