Complete with a folding engraved frontispiece map "A Map of the Alleghany Monongahela and Yohiogany Rivers" (torn at the mount affecting the image), large folding map "of the state of Ohio by Rufus Putnam", "Plat of that part of the State of Ohio... for Military Services", full-page map of Marietta, and a folding "A bird's-eye view of the ancient Works on the Muskingum"(unevenly browned and offset, all mounts renewed). Original blue paper boards (spine worn with loss). Modern green cloth slipcase, and chemise. Provenance: PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM THE AUTHOR to Revered J. Adams on the front free endpaper; morocco library label of Henry F. De Puy on the front paste-down, his sale Anderson, 26 January 1920, lot 1062; The Frank T. Siebert Library of the North American Indian and the American Frontier, his sale 21st May 1999, lot 337. First edition, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY HARRIS as "The Author" on the front free endpaper: "Rev. J. Adams, D.D. President of the College at Charleston S.C. from his friend the author. Feb. 11 1834." Rufus Putnam's "Map of the State of Ohio" is the first large map of the state, while the single engraved view depicts the ancient Indian mounds near the Muskingum. "On p. 46 Harris gives one of the early accounts of the "Seneca Indian Oil" near Pittsburgh, which he calls "petroleum" and quite properly refers to it as "very inflammable"" (Streeter).
