LOT 0076

Presentation Sword 124th Illinois- WIA at Vicksburg

[ translate ]

Exciting lot consisting of a presentation sword, carte-de-visite (CDV), and regimental history that relate to Lt. Theodore Potter of the 124th Illinois. Lt. Potter is noted as being wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863, likely by a Confederate hand grenade during a focal point of the fighting later known as "Slaughter Pen."

The CDV depicts a bust-view of Lt. Potter in uniform with his officer rank affixed. Reverso bears the photographer's imprint and is signed by Potter in ink.

The presentation sword is an m1850 foot officer's sword retailed by C. Roby and Co. of Massachusetts. The patriotic frost etching of the blade is stunning and in wonderful condition. Leather scabbard is currently reinforced with wood for display, which can easily be removed. Sharkskin grip is in good shape with most of its wire absent. Top hanger is inscribed "T. Potter, from his friends, Aurora, Ill." It's likely the sword was tendered at the start of Potter's service.

Included in the grouping is also a re-printed edition of the 124 Illinois Infantry's regimental history that notes Potter and his wound at Vicksburg.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Presentation Sword, Saber, Sabre]
