The photograph depicts the three ritual slaughterers in work clothes leaving the slaughterhouse with slaughtering knives in their hands. The press information leaf on the back of the photograph (in French), states that the photograph followed publication of the regulation forbidding kosher slaughter in Poland.
In Europe between the two World Wars, Jewish ritual slaughter was restricted by various antisemitic organizations that acted in guise of preventing cruelty to animals. The Polish parliament enacted a law in 1936 requiring the pre-stunning of the animal, in effect forbidding kosher slaughter.
13x19 cm. French press stamps and a printed inscription on the back of the photograph; fine condition. Stains, and negligible blemishes.
