Prince Charles On Camilla's 1st Overseas Trip After Marriage: "we are shortly departing for Washington to have lunch with the Bushes at the White House"
ALS

A 2pp autograph letter signed within a handsome greeting card, fully engrossed by Charles Windsor (born 1948), then Prince of Wales and now Charles III, King of England, as "Charles" near the bottom of the second page. November 2, 2005. [Carlyle Hotel, Midtown Manhattan, New York.] The Prince has inscribed both inside pages of the card in black felt-tip pen. The front cover reproduces a 1989 watercolor by Charles called "Balmoral Castle," and was printed by A.G. Carrick Ltd. in 1990 as part of the non-profit Prince of Wales's Charitable Foundation. A few stray negligible scuffs or smudges, else near fine. 8.625" x 6.125".

Prince Charles wrote this letter to "Brooke," possibly referring to American socialite philanthropist Brooke Astor (1902-2007). This makes sense when considering the pair's well-documented friendship, as well as the pointed reference to the Carlyle Hotel, where Astor frequently socialized.

In full:

"November 2nd
2005

My dear Brooke,

Here we are once again at the Carlyle Hotel where I saw you all those years ago! We have missed seeing you so much this time, but I fear it is all hideous, hectic on this official visit and we are shortly departing for Washington to have lunch with the Bushes at the White House = can you believe it, at 1200! We then go back for dinner at 7.00p.m. - they must be gluttons for punishment!

We both send you so many thoughts, kindest possible wishes and much affection -

Charles."

Prince Charles had married his long-term on-and-off-again partner, Camilla Parker Bowles (born 1947), in April 2005, and she was now officially installed as Duchess of Cornwall. Seven months later, Prince Charles and Camilla embarked on her first overseas as a British royal, arriving in New York on November 1, 2005. A skeptical pro-Diana American press snidely dubbed this visit the "un-Diana tour." Camilla certainly had to work hard to overturn the prevailing belief that she was a homewrecker.

As Prince Charles recounts in his letter, the couple traveled to Washington, D.C. the following day, sharing an intimate luncheon with 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, and former First Lady Barbara Bush, served in the private family dining room. Back at the White House several hours later for a 130-person black tie dinner served in the State Dining Room, the royal couple partook of buffalo medallions and chartreuse ice cream. Gifts were exchanged, with Charles and Camilla notably receiving his-and-her customized horse saddles from the Bushes.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
