Prison Swagger Stick c1937 San Quentin Prison Edward L Abbott

Presentation Swagger stick, hand stitched leather handle, likely with a wood core, with braided, finely woven animal hair or hide shaft, brass ferrule. Customized on the crook, "1937 Edward L Abbott San Quentin.". In the early-to-mid 20th century, swagger sticks were carried by military officers, high-ranking law enforcement, and prison wardens, often made by the prisoners. From the estate of Edward L Abbott, mayor of Santa Barbara, California from 1959-1963, who also served in the military and various law enforcement agencies, including a member of the California Board of Prison Terms and Paroles in the 1930s.
