Probably Übelacher, Nuremberg – A scarce small hand-painted tinplate twin-masted toy steamship for the Spanish market, German, circa 1900–1910, of pressed and formed tinplate construction, the open hull is painted pale grey with a broad black waterline band and an ochre or tan-painted interior and deck, amidships is a single cylindrical cream-painted funnel with red band, flanked by an unusually elaborate pair of tall openwork masts retaining much of their original fine-wire standing and running rigging, the masts retain red-and-white pennants, while a further rectangular red-yellow-red Spanish flag is suspended from the after rigging, suggesting manufacture for or sale into the Spanish export market, probably a free-floating bath or pond toy, approximately 140 mm long × 40 mm wide.* Literature: The combination of diminutive scale, hand-painted rather than lithographed finish, open hull, single funnel and particularly elaborate mast and rigging treatment is consistent with German Nuremberg-area penny-toy and small ship production of the turn of the twentieth century. Closely related steamships in the former David Pressland collection were catalogued by Christie's as either Übelacher or probably Übelacher, including a 120 mm steamship dated circa 1900 and a larger two-masted example of 180 mm.
