Launched on 14 January 1969, Soyuz 4 under the command of the cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov was sent on a mission to dock with Soyuz 5 under the command of the cosmonaut Boris Volynov to transfer the two crew members (Aleksei Yeliseyev and Yevgeny Khrunov) then return to Earth; this mission marked the first successful time two manned spacecraft docked together before a connecting tunnel for the docking mechanism was developed, so the transferring cosmonauts had to spacewalk between the two spacecraft.
