\Artist: Prosper De Troyer (1880-1961)
Technique: Acrylic on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 80_60_2_cm
Prosper De Troyer (Destelbergen, December 26, 1880 - Duffel, June 1, 1961) was a Belgian painter. He was educated at Sint-Lucas in Oostakker. He started in Ghent as an apprentice in sculpture studios, with a painting restorer and in a blacksmith shop. During his military service, he takes evening classes at the Academy of Visual Arts in Mechelen, under director/painter Willem Rogier. He continued his studies until 1907 and settled there as a painter at 28 Brusselsesteenweg. In Mechelen he became acquainted with Rik Wouters, and during World War I took part in the exhibitions of the art circle “Doe stil voor”. He is first influenced by Eugène Laermans and Jakob Smits, later by the futurists. He initially assimilated Neo-Impressionism, then Fauvism and Cubism (1918-1919) . From 1920 he evolved towards abstraction and around 1921 adopted the so-called “pure imagery”, with a number of abstract works in which reality is schematized in a geometric way. In 1922 he resolutely returned to figurative design and in particular to expressionism. With themes such as the mother, the child, the human being, the landscape and religiously inspired work, he evolves into a very personal expressionism with powerfully constructed paintings around his family life in a highly simplified expressive form language. He is friends with Michel de Ghelderode, Alfred Ost, Felix De Boeck, Georges Marlier, Frans Mertens and Edmond Grégoire. Exhibits in Amsterdam, Belgrade, Berlin, Bern, Budapest, Florence, Geneva and Paris, among others. On 12/08/1958, Prof. Joos Florquin was a guest at De Troyer in Mechelen with the B. R. T. program “Ten huize van”. Works by the artist can be found in museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Mechelen and Ostend. (wikipedia)
