Prosper Marilhat was one of the first French Orientalist painters to take part in a scientific expedition to the Middle East as early as 1831. He was celebrated as a great Orientalist painter around 1830, just as Eugène Delacroix would later be.

In 1835, he undertook the traditional tour of Italy, visiting in particular Tivoli, its temple, and its waterfalls—so famous among painters traveling in Italy. The year 1836 proved very successful for the painter, as one of his paintings was purchased by the Prince of Joinville. In addition, other paintings were sold to the French royal family of Orléans, who were then ruling the country.
