Prosper Marilhat (1811-1847) French
View of the Bay of Naples
Signed, oil on canvas, 26cm by 53cm

Prosper Marilhat was a French landscape painter whose studies of the Middle East brought him to the attention of the French public. This work probably dates from the 1830s, when Marilhat began turning away from exotic subjects and became more overtly neo-classical in manner under the influence of Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. The warm colours and carefully-balanced composition of this View of the Bay of Naples show that the artist had absorbed Pierre Henri de Valenciennes' principles of landscape painting, and the orderly repoussoir of the scene is typical of the genteel travel views of the 19th century.

. In an overall very good state of preservation. Cleaned and re-varnished. There has been extremely minor and tiny re-touches to the paint across the sky and throughout the expanse of water in the bay. Further extremely sporadic tiny sized re-touches elsewhere. Surface retains good original character. For more information please contact the department.
