Protective Talisman Chart Thangka, 18th Century
A protective talisman chart thangka dating from the 18th century. This paint on cloth thangka features an astrological mandala with concentric circles of the nine Tibetan magical numbers, the Chinese bagua, the animals of the zodiac, and robed personifications of the zodiac animals. The mandala sits upon the belly of a yellow tortoise, who lies on its back above a pool of water. Six bodhisattvas surround the mandala, from top left to bottom right: Manjurshi, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani in wrathful form, a Sakya lama, Tara, and Padmasambhava. Behind it all is a landscape scene with jewels and various mythical beasts. The back of the thangka features a 3-character inscription in Tibetan. The thangka is mounted on a silk backing with silk dowels.
Dimensions are: 19 1/2 inches tall X 16 1/2 inches wide, 49.5 cm X 41.9 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There are tears and creasing. Small areas of paint loss are present. The silk backing is splitting.
