Note:
De Tommasi's watercolours often constitute genre scenes populated by figures in Italian regional dress or clerical costume. The present work is thus unusual for the artist in its representation of a finely-dressed connoisseur, who inspects the picture before him which is tantalisingly obscured from our view.
