Pyromorphite Wheatley Mines, Phoenixville, Schuylkill Township, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, USA "A cluster of dark green crystals up to about 5 mm on a limonite matrix. I traded this specimen from Union College in Schenectady, New York. It is from the Wheatley collection." - Rock H. Currier Perhaps the most prominent of the various lead/copper mines clustered around Phoenixville, Pennsylvania was the eponymously named: Wheatley Mine owned by Charles Moore Wheatley. It produced many fine examples of Lead minerals, Pyromorphite being but one of them. Occasionally, a specimen is found by collectors assiduously combing old dumps in the area, but all the better ones have been 'out of the ground' for decades. This excellent representative of such older material has the rare distinction of being from Wheatley's own collection, and is one of the few that can be decisively attributed to the Wheatley Mine, without any doubts. There is a custom acrylic base and the original collection labels. Overall Measurements: 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.0 inches (6.0 x 6.0 x 2.5 cm) Offered at no reserve Provenance: Ex. Union College, Ex. Wheatley Collections [RHC #1899, acquired 1975] [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
