Quarta Exposició del Circol de Sant Lluch. 1899.
The Saint Lluch Artists' Circle was co-founded by de Riquer, Antoni Utrillo, and Joan Llimona, among others, in Barcelona in 1893. They took issue with the anticlerical sentiments in Modernisme, and aimed to bolster Catholic morals, family virtue, and the path of humility pursued by the medieval guilds. This initiative had a large impact on the development of the Catalan noucentisme movement. Here, de Riquer promotes the group's fourth art exhibition with bold typography and sensitive floral details. "The sunflower is contemplated with attentive reverence by a maid—represented only by her head, covered with a veil trimmed with pearls, and by delicate hands. Everything has a delicious archaic taste and tender femininity... The inclination of the brow accentuates the curls of her hair with a typically modernist play of curves" (Cartellisme Catalunya, p. 24).
