Quartz var. Amethyst Pohndorf Mine, Toll Mountain, Boulder...
Quartz var. Amethyst Pohndorf Mine, Toll Mountain, Boulder Batholith, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA "A rough two inch crystal of smoky quartz with sharp shiny doubly terminated amethyst crystals up to about an inch growing in a stepwise fashion up the sides of the smoky quartz. Overall specimen size is about 2.5 inches. Bought this specimen from Wayne Leicht when he was selling Mitchell Gunnell's collection. Known to many of us as Mitch the Bitch. He lived in Denver, Colorado and wrote long letters to everyone who would correspond with him. When he died his family would not sell his correspondence because they said it was generally unflattering." - Rock H. Currier I believe that we already touched upon the idea that E. Mitchell Gunnell was a "piece of work" - a euphemism that is arguably milder than warranted. Nevertheless, even crusty curmudgeons and cranks can acquire nice rocks, as this luscious 'semi-scepter' from the renowned Pohndorf Mine or Pohndorf Butte, as it sometimes was/is called; can attest. The combination of a Smoky Quartz 'core and covered with purple 'DT's' is irresistible, even for the non-collecting public. Sharp, shiny, purple - Mitch may be gone, but this beauty lives on. Overall Measurements: 2.6 x 1.6 x 1.4 inches (6.5 x 4.0 x 3.5 cm) Offered at no reserve Provenance: Bought from Kristalle (Wayne Leicht), Ex. Mitchell Gunnell Collection [RHC #5235, acquired 1987] [Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
