Quimbaya Pottery Vessel w/ Geometric Motif

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 9th to 14th century CE. A unique pottery vessel presenting with a circular base and impressively thin walls that rise outwards and then upwards to a diamond-shaped flared rim. Lovely diagonal striations are skillfully incised in a horizontal band along the upper part of the body, creating an abstract triangular motif. Each corner of the body features a petite projecting embellishment, resembling petals or a flower. The flared rim displays a design of horizontal and vertical lines. Vessels like this were used to cook plants or make poison for arrows. Size: 13.5" L x 11" W x 4.375" H (34.3 cm x 27.9 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

Condition Report: Base has two collection labels with information about object, "Puimbaye / Columbia" written in pen, and four white strips from previous attachment. Expected chips to rim and stable fissures to base. Light scratches, nicks, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Char marks on exterior from use. Otherwise, very nice with lovely earthen deposits.
