(R) A BALUSTER VASE, KINGFISHER GLAZE, CHINA, QING DYNASTY
Dimensions: Height 19,1 cm Wide 10,6 cm Depth 10,6 cm
Weight: 554 grams
An elegant Qing-dynasty baluster vase with a rounded lower body, gently narrowing shoulder and tall neck, the entire surface animated by a richly variegated glaze. Deep cobalt and turquoise-blue tones mingle with passages of crimson and purple, running vertically in irregular streaks and pooling more densely around the lower body. The restrained form provides an effective counterpoint to the dramatic, almost painterly surface.
Such flambé-like glazes belong to a long Chinese tradition of exploiting kiln effects as an artistic language in their own right. Rather than relying on painted decoration, the visual interest is created by the movement, thickness and interaction of coloured glaze during firing. Every vessel therefore develops an individual pattern of flowing colour.
Here the strongest appeal lies in the tension between classical silhouette and spontaneous surface. The vase reads first as a balanced monochrome form and then, at closer range, as a field of shifting blues and reds, making it a vivid example of Qing ceramic experimentation with high-fired colour glazes.
For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country. Proper export documentation is required to waive the VAT
