(R) A FAMILLE ROSE VASE WITH FIGURAL SCENE, CHINA, QING DYNASTY 19TH CENTURY

[ translate ]

Dimensions: Height 30,5 cm Wide 18 cm Depth 18 cm
Weight: 1917 grams

A 19th-century Chinese famille rose baluster vase with a cylindrical neck and applied turquoise scroll handles. The body is painted with a continuous narrative landscape in which two scholars occupy a boat amid animated waves beneath a willow tree, while auspicious clouds fill the surrounding space. Bands of ruyi heads and upright lappets frame the scene, and an iron-red Qianlong-style seal mark appears on the base.

Famille rose enamels allowed Qing decorators to build scenes with a broad range of opaque pinks, turquoise, purple and softly shaded flesh tones. By the 19th century this palette was used with particular freedom on revival wares that looked back to earlier imperial models while embracing increasingly elaborate figural and landscape decoration.

The present vase succeeds through the contrast between the tranquil human episode and the energetic water surrounding it. The turquoise handles punctuate the silhouette, while the painted scene encourages the vessel to be read almost as a continuous handscroll wrapped around a three-dimensional form.

For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country.
