(R) A FO-DOG, SANCAI GLAZE, KANGXI PERIOD, CHINA, 1700 (RESTORED)
Dimensions: Height 19,5 cm Wide 9 cm Depth 6 cm
Weight: 449 grams
Modelled standing foursquare on a pierced rectangular base, the guardian beast turns its head sharply to one side, its open jaws, curling mane and strongly articulated body giving the small sculpture a lively, alert presence. A cub climbs against the flank, while the surface is enlivened by a rich sancai palette of green, amber, ochre and cream glazes that gather more deeply in the recessed modelling.
Ceramic lions and related guardian beasts continued a long Chinese tradition of protective imagery. The bold modelling and contrasting three-colour glaze place this example within the decorative vocabulary associated with the Kangxi period. The restored sculpture retains its distinctive silhouette and decorative appeal.
For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country.
