R. C. Bowman (American, d. 1903) Uncle Sam and The Turk, Minneapolis Tribune newspaper cartoon, circa 1900 India ink on heavyweight paper 18-1x2 x 17-1x4 inches (47.0 x 43.8 cm) (image) Signed lower right: R.C. Bowman Roland C. Bowman was the star creative personality—cartoonist, poet, author and entertainer—of the Minneapolis Tribune newspaper in the last years of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries. His cartoons appeared regularly in the paper, he made personal appearances, wrote poetry and drew Sunday comics and features including Little Alf and Susan Mary and Freckles and Tan. His work appeared in other newspapers and was annually published in book form by the Tribune. This original was likely published in 1900 during a period of diplomatic tension between the United States and the Sultanate of Turkey. Uncle Sam and the Sultan mix it up as the latter offers up $90,000 to settle claims by U.S. citizens, many of whom were missionaries, for mistreatment and property losses in the lands under rule from Istanbul. The artist's smiling little dog was a standard feature of his cartoons, and it appears at lower left. Erroneous information regarding the artist is written on a label attached to the back.
