RABBI AVRAHAM YAAKOV FRIEDMAN (1884-1961) OF SADAGURA, AUTHOR OF AVIR YAAKOV – INTERESTING LETTER REGARDING THE AUTHENTICITY OF A LETTER ATTRIBUTED TO HIS FATHER .

Typed letter, signed by Rabbi Avraham Yaakov of Sadagura and addressed to Chaim Bloch, author and publisher of books on chassidic history etc. One of his publications included a large number of letters, purported to originate from the Court of the Rebbe of Ruzhin, and apparently confiscated at the time of his arrest by the Russian authorities. It was claimed that this collection was abandoned after the Russian Revolution and was purchased by a Lubavitcher chassid who gave the originals to the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Copies were given to the Rebbe of Chortkov, who then resided in Vienna. Historians and researchers have raised serious doubts on the authenticity of these letters, and apparently Chaim Bloch had concerns over whether a particular letter attributed to Rabbi Yisrael of Sadagura was genuine. In this letter, his son Rabbi Avraham Yaakov also expresses doubts about this letter and advises Chaim Bloch not to publish it.

Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Friedman, son of Rabbi Yisrael of Sadagura and son-in-law of Rabbi Yitzchak Meir Heshel of Kopyczynce. He became Rebbe in 1907, escaping to Vienna in 1914 and to Eretz Yisrael in 1938. His chassidic centre and Beis Hamedrash in Tel Aviv attracted large numbers of chassidim of the Ruzhyn dynasty and he was held in high esteem by other chassidic leaders. Supported Agudas Yisroel and served as member of its Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah. Author of Avir Yaakov.
