RABBI BENYAMIN ARYEH HACOHEN WEISS (1842-1913), RABBI OF CHERNOWITZ, HALACHIC CORRESPONDENCE .

An interesting letter by the Rabbi of Chernowitz to Rabbi Yosef Schwartz (1875-1904) of Hanshowitz discussing the permissibility of using sugar instead of salt to drain blood from meat. The letter is in Rabbi Weiss’s handwriting and bears his signature.

Rabbi Benyamin Aryeh Hacohen Weiss, son of Rabbi Chaim Tzvi of Yanov, and disciple of Yitzchak Ahron Ettinger of Lviv and Rabbi Meshulam Yissachar of Stanislau. Adherent of Rabbi Yitzchak Eisek of Zidatshov. Rabbi of Knihinicz (1864) and Chernowitz (1872). Leading halachic authority and author of Even Yekara (3 vols.) as well as many manuscript works.

Rabbi Yosef Schwartz son of Rabbi Naftali Schwartz of Mad, ordained by Rabbi Moshe Grunwald of Chust and Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Schwadron of Brzezany. Son-in-law of Rabbi Elazar Chaim Deutsch of Hanshowitz and Bonyhad. Prolific author and editor of rabbinic works, and principally of the famous Hungarian rabbinic journal Vayelaket Yosef (1899-1917).
