RABBI MOSHE HERZFELD, DISCIPLE OF CHASSAM SOFER. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER OF CONGRATULATIONS TO RABBI AVRAHAM SHMUEL BINYAMIN SOFER – KESAV SOFER ON THE MARRIAGE OF HIS SON. 1864.

Interesting poetic letter of congratulations sent by Rabbi Moshe Herzfeld of Szerdahely to the Kesav Sofer on the marriage of his son Rabbi Moshe Sofer. In this interesting letter, the writer expresses great deference to the son and successor of his teacher – the Chassam Sofer, thanking him for the honour of being invited to the forthcoming wedding. The letter also conveys good wishes from the writer’s uncle R. Moshe Frei, who was later to become a mechutan of the Kesav Sofer.

Rabbi Moshe Herzfeld (1819-1883), a disciple of the Chasam Sofer and Kesav Sofer, served as Rabbi of the Chevra Torah VaChessed in Szerdahely. Author of Divrei Moshe Hashalem.

Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer (1815-1872), son and successor to Rabbi Moshe Sofer – the Chassam Sofer as Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva in Pressburg and one of the greatest rabbinical authorities of his day. Under his leadership the Pressburg Yeshiva flourished and grew and Hungarian orthodox Jewish communities split from the Neolog – Reformist communities. Author of responsa, Talmud homilies and Torah novellae published under the title Kesav Sofer.
